Addressing election rallies in support of UNP candidates for Attanagalla, Dompe and Maharagama at Nittambuwa, Kirindiwela and Maharagama, he said finding a lasting solution to the ethnic problem and resuscitating the toppling economy were the two major issues confronting the country. "We have two options as solutions. One is the conventional approach while the other involves a new thinking. Out of the two, the UNP selected the latter," he said. The Prime Minister said throughout the past 50 years the country has achieved nothing by doing conventional politics in comparison with Japan, Australia, Thailand and Singapore which have developed tremendously. The UNF Government's new approach has brought the cessation of hostilities between the LTTE and the Government, paving the way for a negotiated political settlement. In spite of allegations from various corners that the UNP was helping the LTTE to divide the country, the absence of war during the past two years has helped to improve the dwindling economy, Wickremesinghe said. |
