So it's cocktails this evening!

by Prasad Abu Bakr

Cocktail parties, social drinking and club hopping all become the order of the day when Friday arrives, ending a long drawn hard working week.

Many a young executive rush home to refresh themselves after a challenging day, or may be a whole week at work after which they look forward to celebrating the weekend with their colleagues, resting their bones and minds after all that decision making, crucial meetings, conferences, bartering and bargaining. However it calls for some planning of things, depending on what you are hoping to do on each weekend.

If its a cocktail party then get there on time, avoid walking in while others are making their exit. Once you are in pick-up a drink and stick with it for some time, at least initially. Do not rush around grabbing for drinks and become the first to get high.

If you are a wine drinker select a white or red depending on the types of food that is served. If a variety of canapes are served a glass of white wine will be a refreshing accompaniment for the evening.

For more heavier stuff such as fried chicken, mini steaks or pizzas and other bigger meals a glass or two of red wine will make an ideal contribution in way of clearing the system of oils and fat that makes up a part of such foods. In case of going in for more `stiff' varieties make sure that you avoid drinking on an empty stomach, munch more at the beginning while going slow on your alcohol intake. Try chasing your drink with water or ice cubes which is better than mixing them with carbonated water. Even cocktails mixed with carbonated beverages get into your bloodstream faster than liquor that is mixed with water or fruit juice.

Cocktail parties does not necessarily mean eating and drinking alone, it calls for a bit of socialising as well. So if you are an introvert put your self in a positive frame of mind and mingle among the guests. If you concentrate on meeting people and take your mind off getting high, then you may create a lower desire at getting high and losing the chance of enjoying the evening.

Try striking a note with someone that captures your interest rather than keep scanning the room for more important or interesting prospects, if you find the person you introduced yourself to be anything but interesting try and make a graceful exit rather than turn away rudely. Avoid approaching famous personalities if you find any around, unless you are introduced by the host.

In case it was somebody you were `dying' to meet, then introduce yourself with much humility not forgetting that he or she has already made a mark on society for his or her contribution in their sphere of work.

Unless you have proceeded to the event from your office (bag, baggage, office wear and all) try making use of the evening, which will certainly still be young, as cocktails generally has a tendency to end, latest by 10.00 p.m. You can extend the evening by going out to dinner with somebody interesting that you met that evening or go night clubbing to sip a few more drinks.

Cocktail parties are a regular happening specially if you are a part of today's corporate sector, besides being high meeting grounds they also open up opportunities for you to spread your wings towards little known territories. So when you step out this evening remember that cocktails serve more than one purpose.

It's not all about merely mixing your drinks as much as mixing around.
