Over 30 Lankan businessmen to visit 'Spring Canton Fair'

by Sudarshana Perera

More than 30 Sri Lankan businessmen will visit "Spring Canton Fair" in China to explore the possibility of joint ventures, technology transfer and other potential with Chinese manufacturers.

A mega Chinese Export Commodities Fair will be held from April 15 to 30, Sri Lankan entrepreneurs will meet Chinese business conglomerates to expedite and streamline the import and export sectors of both countries while exploring opportunities to attract Chinese investments to Sri Lanka.

Prasanna Mendis of Zhida Management Group said that most of the imports from China are done through import and export co-operation, but Sri Lankans have to meet Chinese businessmen to build healthy trade ties which would in return would lead to transfer of technology and other joint ventures.

At a time when Sri Lanka is trying to develop the local industry, enhanced trade ties with China would greatly benefit to develop Sri Lanka's economy while accruing technological know-how. Chinese see Sri Lanka as a small market but they are willing to extend their support for the Sri Lankan economy to thrive. "We will also promote our fresh foods, tea and other products in the Chinese market. There is a good potential for the export of Sri Lankan fresh food to China", Mendis said.

He said the plans are also afoot to set up joint ventures such as plastic processing and adhesive plants with China in Sri Lanka .

"Though language has been a barrier in promoting trade ties with China , we the Zhida Management Group are playing a facilitator role to build a communication bridge between the two countries", he said. Country Director, Zhida Group, Ranmal Goonetileke said that another project earmarked to commence in Sri Lanka is a fibre recycling plant where the country would become an intermediary destination for Chinese production process.

"There is much potential in Sri Lanka and it is time that we develop improved trade ties with China", Goonetileke said.

Exhibitors from Chinese international trade companies and manufacturers will attend the "Canton Fair" bringing a new face to the phrase "Made in China".
