An irreparable loss, says business community : Death of Chrisantha Cooray

Chrisantha Cooray, Chairman of Hatton National Bank (HNB) and Browns Group of Companies passed away yesterday following a heart attack. He was 60.

A business magnate with a charming personality, his death is an irreparable loss, the business community said. Chrisantha Cooray always worked for sustainable economic growth while being sensitive to the needs of the rural and SMI sectors.

He espoused the vision that humility is the key to success in business and social well-being. He was also in the forefront bringing relief to every depressed quarter. Adopting a new vision for his Group before the emerging landscape in the financial sector reforms and deregulation, Cooray played a key role to nurture the development of the entire market in the country.

He was a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, London, a Member of the British Institute of Management and a Fellow of the Institute of Directors UK. When Cooray received his Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants in 1974, he was the youngest Sri Lankan to be so appointed a Fellow.

He had his early education at St. Joseph's College, Colombo and after completing his GCE O/L joined Aquinas University College where he did his London GCE A/L, after completion of which he proceeded to UK in 1965 to pursue his studies in Accountancy.

Prior to joining the Browns Group of Companies, he underwent training in leading Companies in the United Kingdom namely Chlorides Group of Companies and Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd, the world's largest manufacturers of automotive batteries and cement. He returned to Sri Lanka in 1968.

Chrisantha Cooray joined the Browns Group in 1968 and was later appointed the Group Secretary. He was appointed a Director in July, 1979 and functioned as its Managing Director in addition to his duties as Group Secretary. He was appointed the Chairman of Hatton National Bank Ltd. and the Browns Group of Companies in 1989. (SP)
