News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | UNP summons Batticaloa candidates to Colombo by Ananda Kannangara All candidates contesting the April 2 General Elections under the UNF symbol in Batticaloa will be summoned to Colombo by the party leadership on March 15. UNP Chairman Malik Samarawickrema told the Daily News that the Batticaloa candidates will be called to Colombo to discuss the political situation in the district. "Our leadership has focused on the security situation in Batticaloa and also the killing of theUNP candidate for Batticaloa S. Sundarampillai and an EPDP supporter," he said. Samarawickrema said out of the eight UNP candidates who handed over nominations for the Batticaloa district last month, two had withdrawn from the list on security grounds and one was shot dead. "However we have called on all UNP candidates to be present on that day and hope to discuss the situation in the district and also the measures taken by the Government to hold the election peacefully," he said. Discussions will be held at Sirikotha, the UNP Headquarters, with the participation of several high ranking party members. |
