News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Professionals to monitor elections by Chamikara Weerasinghe Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has approved the operation of a voluntary body of professionals to monitor and evaluate the April General Election. The body, established in February 2004, known as the National Election Monitoring and Evaluation Centre (NEMEC) is to submit a full report to the Commissioner on election-related violence and malpractices. NEMEC officials told a press conference at Hotel Nippon, Colombo. NEMEC officials announcing their role as election observers. The NEMEC is not an NGO and runs totally on local funds, its Treasurer Dr. Yasanjali Devika Jayatilleke, said. Coordinating Secretary, NEMEC, Amarananda Weerasinghe said NEMEC will monitor the election countrywide with 600 observers, 140 electorate coordinators and 22 district coordinators, who will be directed by NEMEC's 11-member National Executive Committee. |
