UPFA will pay arrears of compensation to sacked employees of Plantation Ministry -Tikiri Kobbekaduwa

The victorious United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) will take steps to pay arrears of compensation and give plots of land to thousands of employees whose services have been terminated by the Ministry of Plantation Industries, said UPFA Kandy district candidate Tikiri Kobbekaduwa. He was speaking at a meeting held at the Abhayaraja Pirivena hall at Urapola, Pilimatalawa, convened by the Unions of dismissed employees of the Plantation Industries Ministry, Kandy District Janawasa Commission and the Land Reform Commission.

He further said that the late Hector Kobbekaduwa, Minister of Lands nationalised around a million acres of land, owned by local and foreign land owners with a good intention, started various projects and provided employment opportunities to around 11,000 youth.

The UNP Government that came to power in 1977 destroyed the program of the Cooperative Land Reform Commission aimed at productive land use.

Compensation has not properly been paid to those who lost their means of livelihood by this action. Compensation has been partly paid and the balance not paid.

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga who was the Director of the Janawasa Commission had ordered the relevant officers to expedite the payment of compensations but some officers have not implemented the orders yet.

One hundred acres have been allocated from Kirimetiya estate in Yatinuwara to give plots of lands to 180 employees to whom injustice had been done, in the Yatinuwara electorate. Present Officers have not implemented this as yet.

Kobbekaduwa said that he would give an undertaking to get a future United People's Freedom Alliance Government to pay compensation to all those who had been treated unjustly in this manner.
