News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Polls violence incidents by Sarath Malalasekera Four attempted murders by using firearms have been reported from Batticaloa, Kandy, Kelaniya and Mount Lavinia, the Police Election Secretariat said yesterday morning. Post-nomination incidents of polls violence reached 309 yesterday. According to the Police Election Secretariat they had received 246 complaints of Violation of Election Offences and 63 complaints of Violation of Election Laws up to yesterday. DIG Jayantha Wickremaratneis overseeing the Violation of Election Laws Unit while DIG Gamini Navaratne is in charge of the Unit on Election Offences. The highest number of incidents was reported from Ratnapura numbering 27. The other incidents reported were Negombo 22, Ampara 20, Matale 19 and 16 each at Anuradhapura and Chilaw police areas. Other incidents have been reported from the Batticaloa, Mawanella, Ampara, Negombo, Anuradhapura, Ratnapura, Kandy, Tangalle, Eheliyagoda, Kalmunai, Akuressa, Wattala, Matale, Wattegama, Nagoda-Galle, Welipenna, Walapone, Kegalle, Gampola, Gampaha, Kadawatha, Nugegoda and Chilaw police areas. Inspector General of Police Indra de Silva has directed all Senior DIGs and DIGs to obtain assistance as an when required from the three Armed Forces. All Police stations have been directed to entertain complaints regarding the violation of Election Laws from all candidates and the public. The OICs have been instructed to communicate with the Police Election Secretariat daily, DIG Wickremaratne said. |
