News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | Freedom Polls Watch tells Police : Take firm action against disruptors The Freedom Polls Watch has urged the IGP Police to take firm action against anyone attempting to disturb the conduct of a free and fair poll in the country. The FPW in a press release states 'The timely discovery and seizure of 20,000 leaflets by the Kotahena Police containing material calculated to deceive and mislead the general public and containing harmful, false and out-of-date statements against the President are commendable actions by the Police that will help the conduct of fair elections. We urge all candidates and their supporters not to engage in any unfair or wrongful activities against other political parties or their leaders. However, we wish to state that Police powers do not extend to the seizure or sealing of printing presses which undertake the printing of posters, promoting a particular candidate or candidates. Section 74 (1) and (d) of the Parliamentary Elections Act permits the display of posters promoting the candidates "on any premises on any day on which an election meeting is due to be held in that premises" or "on any vehicle used for the conveyance of a candidate at such election." The printing of posters for such purposes is not an offence and action to seal printing presses would be a violation of the law. However, we reiterate our request, for all candidates not to display posters in any place to which the public have a right of access or are granted access as it would be an offence and the Police would be entitled to act at the time of attempting to paste or display the posters and everyone must desist from violating the law. |
