Freedom Alliance manifesto launch on Thursday

The Freedom Alliance manifesto will be ceremonially launched in the presence of key members of the Alliance, a cross section of the business community, academics and professionals at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on March 11 (Thursday) at 7.00 p.m., states a UPFA press release.

Solheim arrives

A breakaway faction of Tamil Tiger rebels Monday played down fears of renewed bloodshed in Sri Lanka as a Norwegian peace envoy Erik Solheim arrived here in a bid to salvage the faltering bid to end ethnic strife.

The spokesman said they were also ready to open talks with Norwegian special envoy Erik Solheim who arrived here on a previously arranged eight-day visit to review the Oslo-brokered truce between troops and Tigers.

Tragedy in river, father two sons drown

A father with his two children were drowned in Maadhu Ganga of Balapitiya after their boat capsized.

The deceased were H. L. Bandusena alias, Bandu tailor (50), H. L. Nishan Chathuranga (15), and H. L. Roshan Indika (14) of Modera Patuwata Dodanduwa. It was stated at the inquest held by K. Malavige, Inquirer into Sudden Deaths, Wathugedera, that they all came to their mother's house to participate in a Sanghika Dana Ceremony at Balapitiya.

After the ceremony the father accompanied by his two teenage sons went on a boat trip on Maadhu ganga. They sailed on a small wooden trunk outrigger boat. Suddenly the boat capsized in the middle of the river owing to a powerful wave spread by a fast driven mechanized boat nearby.

The post mortem examination was held by Dr. J. M. Jayatilake, DMO Base Hospital, Balapitiya, who reported all three deaths were caused by suffocation.

The Ambalangoda police conducted inquiries.

All dead bodies were taken away to Modara Patuwata of Dodanduwa for cremation.
