CEB should promote Solar Home Systems

by Sirajiv Sirimane

Director - Softlogic Solar (Pvt) Ltd, Sampath Ameresekere.

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) should promote Solar Home Systems as a substitute to grid based power, said Director of Softlogic Solar, Sampath Ameresekere.

The power supply is still a luxury to areas especially in the Anuradhapura, Puttalam, Polonnaruwa and particularly in the North East. The chances of the national grid reaching these areas in the next few years is very low and thus an alternative power source should be introduced. Many people use bottle lamps, which had caused many accidents.

The advantage of using solar power is that it is safer and a person does not have to spend on monthly bills. He said that a typical Solar Home System (SHS) consists of the Solar Panel, Charge Controller, 12V Battery, DC Lighting fixtures and switches/plugs complete with wiring. Softlogic Solar will offer Solar Home Systems, ranging from the basic three light systems to larger 10 light systems.

A television, radio cassette recorder and around five to 10 lights could be used through a solar power system. Apart from these systems, the company will also concentrate on industrial solutions. These solutions which would enable medium and large-scale industrialists to obtain electricity through Solar power. Softlogic Solar (Pvt.) Ltd., which entered the highly competitive Solar Home System business, is stepping into its second year of operations concentrating mainly on Solar Home Systems. The company's main focus is into customer care and providing quality systems.

"SUN Solar" brand has now become a household talking point in the areas where the national grid power is not available.

The secret behind the success of Softlogic has been the quality levels maintained by their highly committed technicians in relation to workmanship.

Further the flexibility to change the systems to suit the exact requirements of the user has also contributed to the success," he said.

Softlogic Solar (Pvt) Ltd, which operates branches in Puttalam, Anuradhapura, Ampara, Mahiyangana, Morawaka, Medirigiriya and Balangoda areas has provided electricity to hundreds of homes in these areas. The company is a fully owned subsidiary of Softlogic Holdings, a global player with operations in Australia, Singapore and Pakistan. Softlogic has diversified into IT and Telecommunications and Power Protection. At present the company employs over 500 professionally trained staff globally.
