Successful Investment Promotion Mission for BOI in Japan Coinciding with the UNDP sponsored Kansai SME Forum, the BOI made several inroads into Japanese investor interest in Sri Lanka, after a successful promotional mission program in Nagoya, Nagano, Osaka and Tokyo recently. The main companies that were targeted by the BOI included Pioneer and Mitsubishi in Tokyo, and Koa Electricals, Takano and Fuji Constructions in Nagano. The Sri Lankan delegation met General Manager, Pioneer Corporation, Masahiro Kawamura and the Deputy General Manager and Manager Asia, Mitsubishi Corporation, Yasuhiko Kitagawa and Takuya Sahashi. The BOI team also met key companies in the pharmaceutical, fabric-softener and mineral sand processing industries in Osaka, to get them to set up a manufacturing presence in Sri Lanka. The mission also included touching base and strengthening investor relations with Noritake in Nagoya, the oldest Japanese investment in the country, with Sri Lanka supplying as much as 10 % of the total tableware of the Noritake group of companies. In addition to presentations by BOI senior officials on Sri Lanka's foreign investment climate and comparative advantages, regional presentations were made by REDC CEOs for the Southern, Central, North Eastern and North Western regions. Principal funding for the Kansai Forum was provided by a generous grant from the Japanese Government with additional financing and advisory assistance from UNDP. The Kansai Forum was designed to launch a sustained get-acquainted process between Sri Lankan businesses and Chambers and their Kansai counterparts. |
