EU team to monitor polls

by Ariyaratne Ganegoda

A team of officials from the European Union to monitor the April 2 General Election arrived in the island yesterday.

The seven-member team also consists of election monitors. They will be in the island until April 10. The leader of the group of election monitors is due to arrive on Wednesday.

The chief election monitor will be John Cushnan of Ireland. He is a senior member of the European Parliament.

PAFFREL has also planned to bring down foreign monitors to monitor the election.

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake has appointed two monitors to each district. Police protection will be given to all vehicles used by the election monitors, the Elections Commissioner said.
