No mercy for corrupt - President

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga said under a Freedom Alliance Government, any Minister found guilty of corruption, fraud or theft will have no mercy, but will be sacked within 24 hours.

Addressing a meeting of University students and Human Disaster Management Coordinators at President's House, last Friday, on 'The student's task for tomorrow' requested the youth in her endeavours to clean public life, she said the curbing of increase in the criminal tendencies among the youth is a top priority in the country today and that young men and women must work finding solutions to diverse problems, not by taking arms, but by entering peaceful negotiation.

The Freedom Alliance appreciates the right to dissent and will be prepared to accommodate protests. On the contrary, the UNP regime since 1977, repressed agitation through thuggery and state violence. Politicians alone cannot uplift the country.

The people's cooperation is necessary to protect the democratic rights. Under a Freedom Alliance Government, people's committees (janatha kamitu) will be formed at divisional level to bring about this atmosphere, stated the President.
