Pakistan go away with U-19 Youth World Cup

by Chris Dhambarage

DHAKA, Bangladesh. March 5. The young Pakistan team crowned themselves as the one day kings when they defeated West Indies by 25 runs in the fifth ICC under 19 Youth World Cup cricket tournament final played at the Bangabandhu National Stadium under lights here today.

After compiling a competitive total of 230 for 9 from their 50 overs they put up a magnificent performance on the field to dismiss the opposition for 205 from 47.1 overs.

The Pakistanis held their nerve during the last few overs and eventually cruised home quite convincingly with Tariq Mahmood capturing three wickets for 34. But it was their sharp fielding that really made the difference with Mansoor Ajmad and wicket keeper Zulqaranain Haider being outstanding.

The West Indies had a chance of pulling off the game at one stage when skipper Denesh Ramdin and Jonathan Augustus were batting beautifully. But this Pakistan team kept on trying with their spinners and were eventually rewarded for all their hard work.

The West Indies of course made a promising start with the openers Xavier Marshall and Tishan Maraj putting on 69 runs in 12.4 overs. Both handled the Pakistan new ball attack quite successfully while committing very few mistakes during the initial stages.

However they departed when they were well set for a big score and the West Indies soon slumped to 94 for 4 by the half way stage of the innings. This was mainly due to a sustained spell of bowling from off spinner Jahingir Mizra who impressed a lot with his accuracy and consistency.

The West Indies earlier took control of the game as they restricted the strong Pakistan batting side for 229 for 9 in from their 50 overs. After Pakistan had elected to bat first and got off to a flying start West Indies came back into the game strongly through their spinners with Rishi Bachan making a tremendous impact.

The left arm spinner successfully bowled his quota of ten overs on the trot and was instrumental in bringing the scoring rate down at a crucial stage of the innings. He first went through the defence of Adnam Zaheer in the 13th over and in the next over he had the Pakistan captain Khalid Latif stumped for 20. Latif of course had a life earlier when he was dropped by Asaad Fudadin at extra cover from the bowling of Mathew.

The Pakistan openers after a cautious start opened out later with Adnam Zaheer cracking four boundaries in one over. But the introduction of spinners brought a dramatic change into the game with Pakistan really struggling for runs mid way in the innings.

Pakistan were reeling at 89 for four by the 22nd over with two of their top run getters Jahangir Mirza and Tariq Mahamood also failing to make any impact with the bat. However Pakistan made a good recovery through their fifth wicket pair of Asif Iqbal and Salman Qadir who put on 97 runs in quick time.

Asif Iqbal went on to complete a superb half century from 72 balls with one six and three boundaries. He was dismissed in the 43rd over with the total at 178 following a superb piece of fielding from Rishi Bachan. Salman Qadir too departed in the next over for a well compiled 42 from 63 deliveries which included only a solitary boundary.

Pakistan never looked like getting on top of the West Indies attack and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals.
