JVP making senseless statements - UNF

by Ananda Kannangara

The UNF yesterday accused the JVP of making senseless statements that indicate its inability to comprehend the present economic trends.

Referring to a statement allegedly made by the JVP that it would explore the possibility of rejecting World Bank/IMF assistance, Minister Dr. Karunasena Kodithuwakku told the media that such senseless statements show the JVP's inability to run the economy of a country like Sri Lanka.

"We are asking the JVP to reveal to the people the methods they will adopt to obtain financial assistance in case they stop obtaining loans from international monetary organisations," Kodithuwakku said.

He said that people have suspicions that the JVP has black money, collected during the insurgency periods.

Dr. Kodithuwakku also lamented JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe's call to reject the Rs 4.5 billion Sri Lanka obtained from the donor conference meeting in Japan last year.

He accused the JVP for stating that they would control imports to a great extent without knowing that other countries too would stop buying garments and tea from Sri Lanka.

"Without knowing about the country's economy, the JVP wants to introduce a mixed economy instead of the currently existing market economy," he said. He said when India, China and Malaysia converted their mixed economy to a market economy it was a shame that the JVP was trying to take Sri Lanka backward.

Referring to a statement made by Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar to a weekend newspaper regarding the peace talks, former Media Minister Imthiaz Bakeer Markar said Kadirgamar's statement that the Alliance would talk only with the LTTE at the peace talks was immoral as he has completely forgotten the protection and the rights of large number of Muslims in the North and East.
