Keep out mushrooms, says Bhumiputra

The Sinhalaye Mahasammata Bhumiputra Party Leader Dr.Harischandra Wijayatunga, in a letter yesterday, addressed to the Commissioner of Elections urged him to take steps to keep away mushroom political parties and contestant groups who attempt to steal air time and who attempt to gain access to counting centres for the benefit of affluent political parties.

Dr. Wijayatunga, in his letter charged these parties and groups as fake and incredulous promoters of the cause of particular affluent political parties, and urged the Elections Commissioner to take steps to: (a) prevent them from making speeches promotive of other contestants other than their own; (b) require Elections Commissioner's prior approval before their speeches are broadcast or telecast and (c) refrain from issuing permits to parties or groups who are deemed unfit to seek entrance to polling and counting centres. If these factors are ignored, the hope for a free and fair election cannot be sustained, stated Dr. Wijayatunga's letter.
