UNF neglected education, says President

by Anura Maitipe

The People's Alliance government allocated Rs.7200 million in 1994 to upgrade primary and higher education, but the present Government has failed to utilise those funds allocated for education, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga told teachers and Government officials at President's House on Wednesday.

The President said when her government assumed office in 1994, it had a broad scope to upgrade the education system to suit the latest trends of development.

"In the midst of war, we allocated sufficient funds for the development of education and closely monitored the utilisation of funds and made remarkable progress in the field of education," she said.

She regretted that the UNF regime could not even implement one of those key projects earmarked for 2002 and 2004. This was due to inefficiency of politicians and authorities in the Ministries, she said.

"I made an official request to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and instructed him to expedite the development process of education.

"He nodded and went, but nothing was done," the President recalled.
