The President of the UK Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Dr. Michael Gagan will represent the RSC at the conference on "Chemical Education for National Development" organised by the College of Chemical Sciences of the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon at Hotel Trans Asia on April 29 and 30, 2004. The Honorary Dean of the College of Chemical Sciences Prof. J. N. Oleap Fernando states that the conference is being held to commemorate the completion of twenty five years of the very successful and productive Graduateship Courses in Chemistry organised by the Institute to provide Sri Lanka with Graduate Chemists needed for Sri Lanka's national development. The two day conference in April will be inaugurated by Minister Karu Jayasuriya. The Guests of Honour are Dr. Michael Gagan and Professor Ho Si Thoang from Vietnam who is the current President of the Federation of Asian Chemical Societies. The keynote speaker will be Prof. R. P. Gunawardena, Chairman of the National Education Commission. The Conference will conclude with a half day symposium on "Chemistry Industry Interaction" that will enable to discuss how industry interaction with the Institute will promote relevant changes to the curricula of the Graduateship programme. The keynote speaker at this symposium will be Chairman of the Lankem Group of Companies Channa Gunasinghe. |
