ITN's new service lauded

Congratulatory messages have begun to flow in recognition of the World Service of the Independent Television Network (ITN).

Information and Telecommunication Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar and world renowned scientist Sir Arthur C. Clarke were among the dignitaries who have sent such messages.

Minister Kadirgamar in his massage states:

"I am pleased to send this massage on the occasion of the launching of the ITN World Service in collaboration with the TV Lanka Worldwide Satellite TV Channel. This timely action taken by the ITN is praiseworthy. It links Sri Lanka to the community of nations that enjoy access to the wealth of information available today.

Hitherto, Sri Lanka was unable to disseminate its own news to the rest of the international community.

I am happy to congratulate the country's pioneering television channel, the Independent Television Network, and its entire staff on their courage and foresight in launching this laudable venture.

Sir Arthur C. Clarke: "I am delighted to hear that ITN Sri Lanka is launching an international service. This will enable Sri Lanka's pioneering television station to reach out to tens of thousands of Sri Lankans living and working in the Europe, Middle East and Australia.

When I invented the concept of geostationary communication satellites in 1945, I never expected it to be a practical reality in my lifetime.

But it took only 20 years for the first commercial comsat to be launched, and the rest, as they say, is history.

TV broadcasting in Sri Lanka will soon be 25 years old. During much of that time, we have been receiving foreign television programmes via satellite.

It is commendable that ITN Sri Lanka is now collaborating with TV Lanka to transmit our own content to the Global Village. With 1 in every 18 Sri Lankans living overseas, this transmission will cater to the cultural needs of expatriate Sri Lankans. It will also help boost tourism and enhance our country's image abroad.

I wish ITN Sri Lanka every success in its new endeavour.
