Over 15 inmates and four Prison officials were injured last evening over a water shortage dispute at the Colombo Remand Prison Welikada, Police said. Police used tear gas and riot Police squads were called to calm the tense situation inside the Prison, officials told the Daily News last night. Officials said the dispute was over the inadequate water supply for the inmates following the water cut in the Colombo metropolitan area. The Secretary, Mininstry of Interior M.N. Junaid, DIG Colombo Sirisena Herath and Prisons Commissioner Rumy Marzook rushed to the scene and restored normalcy. DIG Herath said the police had sent several bowsers of water to the prison while the Prisons Commissioner had made arrangements to do the same. |
