by Manjula Fernando The residence of former Transport Minister and PA candidate for Colombo district A. H. M. Fowzie at Sagara Road, Bambalapitiya was attacked by a gang of thugs around 9.00 pm on Thursday. The former minister who was having a discussion with his party supporters at the time was unharmed as the attackers who came in three trishaws and a dolphin van, could only cause minor damage, but vanished after seeing the crowd at the house, a spokesman for Fowzie told the Daily News. He expressed fears that the mob could have been deployed to assassinate the former minister. "There were about 100-150 party supporters inside the house at the time. We heard sounds of vehicles and came out to see what was going on. As we were coming out, about 15 to 20 people got down from the vehicles and started attacking our supporters near the gate. Just then those attending the discussion came out to counter the mob. Seeing the large crowed they vanished and our people managed to apprehend a suspect," the spokesman said. He was handed over to Bambalapitiya Police. Police arrested two others and the trishaws used for the attack yesterday. |
