Steering committee meets today: Study on final report on port sector master plan By Sudarshana Perera The steering committee of representatives from ministries and institutions and funding agencies will meet today to study the final report on the port sector master plan. The report drafted by a team of consultants and funded by the Asian Development Bank has been forwarded to the Ministry of Port Development and Shipping. Secretary to the Ministry of Port Development and Shipping, Ranjith Maligaspe said that the master plan report was a study to ascertain priorities to further develop the port and shipping related activities in the country. The study was a comprehensive one done by a team of local and foreign experts. "Asian Development Bank (ADB) agreed to commence a study to ascertain the priority areas in port and shipping industry in Sri Lanka. The steering committee will forward their recommendations to the relevant authorities on the prioritisation of each port in future port development programs", Maligaspe said. Sources pointed out that the proposed Colombo South Harbour, Hambantota and Colombo main harbour are top priority locations. Consultants have amongst other things, have presented a future port demand forecast concerning each port in respect of containerized cargo, bulk cargo and dry bulk cargo. The new step comes under the Ministry of Port Development and Shipping plan to promote a conducive policy environment and further develop port facilities to promote and develop the shipping and other maritime related services through facilitating an appropriate policy and regulatory framework. |
