Indian skipper gets one match suspension

DHAKA, Bangladesh. February 29, Indian captain Ambati Rayudu was handed over a one match suspension on Friday after breaching the International Cricket Council Code of Conduct, in the under 19 Youth World Cup Super League final day night match against Sri Lanka played at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on Thursday.

John Morrison the ICC match referee handed down a one match ban on Rayudu who also missed the semifinal clash against arch rivals Pakistan here today. The Indian captain was guilty of indulging in unnecessary delaying tactics on the field when Sri Lanka made that spectacular run chase during the first fifteen overs of the game. The Lankans finished on 260 after India had piled up a massive total of 316 runs from 50 overs.

Rayudu was reported by South African umpire Brian Jerling and West Indian Billy Doctrove , under provision C2 of the Code of Conduct for a Level 2 misdemeanour that brought the game into disrepute.

Rayudu in a strange move changed his field after every delivery when Sri Lankan opener Upul Tharanga smashed the Indian bowling to all parts of the ground with a 29 ball half century. The charge was related to excessive time wasting in the opening overs of that game during which time India bowled only eight overs in the first 50 minutes of play.

John Morrison took the decision after a hearing attended by Rayudu, Indian team manager Ram Babu Gupta and the two umpires Brian Jerling and Billy Doctrove. Match referee Morrison told reporters that the umpires reported the player after he failed to respond to a number of warnings relating to time wasting. ``In this instance, I endorsed the view that his conduct brought the game into disrepute and the appropriate penalty is a one match suspension'' added John Morrison.

The code of conduct used for the tournament is identical to that used for International matches and the only difference been that the players are not fined for breaches. There is no right of appeal for a Level 2 offence. (C.D).
