Donald Munasinghe heads Boxing Judges Association

The veteran boxing administrator, Donald Munasinghe who has been closely associated with local boxing as a coach, referee-judge and juror for more than 45 years, has been elected uncontested as the President of the Boxing Referees and Judges Association of Sri Lanka (BRJA-SL) at the Annual General Meeting held on Sunday 22nd February 2004 at the Forum Hall of Central YMCA, Colombo.

A retired Grade one school principal by profession, he was the President of the Schools Boxing Association twice and the Secretary of Amateur Boxing Association in 1995.

For a spell of 20 years consecutively, he had been the secretary of BRJA-SL and last year had been the Vice President. He ran the boxing office at Oberoi Hotel for 1991 Colombo SAF Games.

All the functioning referees and judges of today have been trained by him. To his credit, some of them are now in International and Asian Panels. He was the captain of Thurstan College boxing team in 1960 and later taught there for 8 years since 1975, meanwhile creating a champion boxing team.

Radha Thilak Sing Perera, an old boy of Veyangoda Central College, a senior referee-judge and presently a juror, was elected as the vice president uncontested. He has been the hony. secretary for the past two years and is also a member of Asian Judges Panel (FAAB) and officiated at the Asian Olympic Trials held in Philippines this year.

For two decades, he has been training boxers in 6 schools and 2 sports clubs around Veyangoda.

The Secretary of Air Force and Defence Services Sports Boards, Wing Commander Nishantha Dharmadasa, was elected as the Hony. Secretary uncontested.

He is an Asian referee-judge and displayed his calibre to everyone's satisfaction at the International Military Games held in Athens last year. He is an old boy of Thurstan College.

Former Navy and Zahira Boxing Club boxer Robert Wellington was re-elected as the Assistant Secretary uncontested. He was the manager to Sri Lanka women's team for 2nd Asian boxing championship meet held in Hizar, India last November.

Former Trinity College Lion and Best Boxer at Stubbs Shield championships in 1982, Udeni Kiridena was re-elected as the Hony. Treasurer for the 4th year in succession uncontested. He is also an elite member of the Asian Referees and Judges panel (FAAB) and officiate at Asian Olympic Trials held in Philippines this year.

Former Royalist and senior referee-judge, Priyantha Malavi was re-elected as Hony. Auditor uncontested.
