UNP misleading public on Freedom Alliance economic policy - Mahinda

The UNP is misleading the public claiming that the Freedom Alliance economic policy will bankrupt the economy and destroy the interest of the local business community, former Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse told a public rally in Weeraketiya yesterday.

"We will give a helping hand to the local businessmen and improve the economy in order to provide economic benefits to the masses," he said.

Our economic policy is not to create a society dependent on subsidies but a one to assist people to become economically powerful without being dependent on subsidies any more, Rajapakse added.

During our last regime we started many development projects in Hambantota for the benefit of the rural masses.

But, the UNP toppled our Government and grabbed power saying that they can provide a better life to the rural masses.

They never implemented those projects.

That is why people in these areas economically suffer as never before, he pointed out.

"I assure that we will not use these poor people for political gain but will implement all abandoned development projects of our Government in order to help them economically," Rajapakse said.

We will take every possible step to improve the purchasing power of people in these areas and help the rural businessmen through various means to become big businessmen under the Freedom Alliance, he added.
