Gunawardhana addressing a meeting at Venderesanpura colony said the people living in the Eastern province still have high regard for the eminent leaders of the UNP like late D.S. and Dudley Senanayake for what they have done to improve agriculture in this region by opening colonisation schemes. He said contrary to what the former leaders did the present leaders of the UNP including Ranil Wickremesinghe and his stooges are trying to destroy the colonisation schemes at Kantale and Ampara in the Eastern province. These so-called leaders should be totally rejected from the political field. 102 long-standing members and supporters of the UNP joined the SLFP at this meeting. Gunawardhana continuing said the PA government while in power had to allocate Rs. 500 billion yearly for the war. Despite this extra expenditure the PA government provided the fertilizer subsidy and did not cut the allocation for education. In addition roads in the rural areas were renovated, provided drinking water and also increased the salaries of public servants. Though the UNF government boast that they were instrumental in ending the war they have not used the money saved because of the ceasefire for the benefit of the people. They have cut down the fertilizer subsidy and have failed to take steps to bring down the cost of living. The UNF government helped the wealthy sections and were trying to sell the national wealth of this country to foreigners. But the timely action taken by the President saved the country. Other speakers included R.M. Wijesiri, Mohomed Azad, A.M. Ranbanda and S.M. Heenbanda. |
