Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is the only President who has honoured the Muslims - Athaulla

Alaiyadivembu group correspondent

The incapability of Rauff Hakeem to be the leader of Muslim community under the leadership of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress will be proved by the forthcoming general election, said the Senior Deputy Chairman, newly formed National Muslim Congress Dr. A. Uthumalebbe at the district committee meeting of the National Muslim Congress under the aegis of its national leader and former Minister of Highways A. L. M. Athaullah at Main Street, Addalaichenai.

Dr. Uthumalebbe further said that the attempts made by religious dignitaries (Ulamas), educationists and intellectuals of the Muslim community to make unity among Rauff Hakeem and Athaullah's factions with a view to settle the conflict amicably and make them bring under one roof of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress for the last fortnight ended in failure because of the adamant attitude of Rauff Hakeem. He purposely disregarded all advisers and did it all on his own accord.

If Rauff Hakeem had complied with us, these two factions would have been united for the benefit of the Muslim community. I raise a question that when Tamil people of all parties have joined hands at this hour of need, why can't our Muslims join hands, he said.

A. L. M. Athaullah said that we have newly formed a new political party under the name of National Muslim Congress (NMC), which has entered an agreement with the United People Freedom Alliance (UPFA) with the motive of contesting the forthcoming general election.

Once the General Election is over, we will make all efforts to get this National Muslim Congress registered as a recognised political party in Sri Lanka.

We should all function together with a view to achieve our targets. It is the bounden duty of all of us to strengthen the hands of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to form the government of UPFA. President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga is the only President who has honoured the Muslim community in all respects, he also said.
