Rice, sugar, milk, coconut up, vegetables down - CCPI The Colombo Consumers's Price Index (CCPI) for the month of February shows an increase in the prices of rice, sugar, fresh milk, cummin seed, coconut and coconut oil, mutton, fresh-fish-mullet, some varieties of dried fish and firewood, according to a press release issued by the Government Information Department. There has been a price reduction in limes, red onions, some varieties of fresh fish, potatoes and most varieties of vegetables due to more supply of locally produced agricultural consumer goods. The CCPI for the month of February was 3454.0. This shows a decrease of 25.4 Index points or 0.7%, from the January 2004 Index. The press release states that this is a decrease of Rs. 51.28 in the Expenditure Value of the "Market basket" when compared to January, the release states. Rise in per capita income - Govt spokesman The country's per capita income has increased by 9.3 percent in the year 2003 according to the Central Bank Report for 2003, the Government Spokesman's Office said in a statement, outlining the country's economic performance in 2003 The per capita income which stood at 841 US dollars in 2001 has increased to 953 US dollars in 2003, the statement said. The country's agriculture production has increased by 3.4 per cent in 2003 in contrast to the negative 1.7 per cent growth in 2001. Industrial sector has recorded a 5.8 per cent growth in 2003 in contrast to the negative 2.1 percent growth in 2001 and Service sector has increased by 6.8 percent in 2003 in contrast to the negative 0.5 per cent growth in 2001, the statement said pointing to the Central Bank statistics. |
