St. Anthony's, Kandy celebrates 150 years

St. Anthony's College, Kandy will celebrate 150 years of service in the field of education and sports on March 12.

Several religious ceremonies and extracurricular activities have been organised in connection with the celebrations.

Speaking at a press conference held at the Blue Elephant, Colombo recently, the principal of St. Anthony's College Fr. Hilarian Fernando said that many academics and persons of eminence such as university professors, doctors, Chief Justices, Central Bank Governors and Army Generals had been produced by the St. Anthony's College, Kandy during the period of 150 years.

" Two sportsmen, in particular has achieved international fame. One is Priyantha Ekanayake, who captained the Sri Lanka Rugby Football team for a record 10 years and the other being the world's best off-spin bowler, Muttiah Muralitharan who continues to shatter the world records before him", he added.

According to the celebrations program, the main ceremonies will begin with a multi-religious program scheduled for March 12 at 8.30 a.m. followed by hoisting of flags, launching of event logo, releasing of pigeons and balloons, speeches, issue of sesquicentennial publication, cancellation of stamp, issuing of first day cover, opening of college archives, drill display and cultural show.

The annual match with Trinity will be played on March 13 and the limited overs match on March 20.

For the first time, the Antonian awards for excellence to honour distinguished past pupils of St. Anthony's College will be held on March 18 at the college hall.

According to the Sesquicentennial Celebrations Committee members, an educational, sports cultural and extracurricular activities will take place every month until the year 2004 ends to mark the 150th anniversary of St. Anthony's College, Kandy.

Fr. Hilarian Fernando, Principal St. Anthony's College, Gamini Karunaratne, President OBA, Ranjith Samarasekera, Jaliya Jayasooriya, Akantha Pandithasekera, Secretary - OBA, Major Saliya Kulatunge, Malcom Dias and Gerard Mendis of Colombo Hilton participated at the press conference.
