Japan contributes Rs. 3.5 million for drought relief

In response to the request regarding emergency relief for drought affected districts in Sri Lanka, made by the Government of Sri Lanka at the briefing held on February 13, the Government of Japan has decided to provide a sum of US $ 35,681 (approximately Rs. 3.5 million) towards the Project for "Emergency Relief Assistance for Selected Districts Affected by Drought" through Lanka Jathika Sarvodaya Shramadana Sangamaya, under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects.

The assistance will be utilized to purchase and distribute food packages for 2,400 families living in the impoverished villages in Hambantota, Moneragala, Puttalam and Anuradhapura, where the drought has most severely affected the livelihood of people.

The assistance packages consist of basic food items such as rice, flour, milk powder, sugar, canned fish etc., and each package will support a 6-member family for two weeks.

The beneficiaries will be selected among the low-income families, with the cooperation of community-based organizations and the Divisional Secretariats, states a Japanese Embassy press release.

Japan was the first among donor communities to respond to the appeal by the Government of Sri Lanka, and pledged its support toward the relief effort by the Sri Lankan Government to help drought affected areas.

The decision of Japan to implement the Project through the Non-Governmental Organization has been made considering the needs for speedy and precise delivery, and the capacity of Sarvodaya to meet such needs with its grassroots network.

In the past, Japan provided Rs. 7.43 million toward the relief work on Drought Affected Families in Hambantota District in the year 2001, and Rs. 6.42 million toward the Project for Rural Water Supply for Drought Affected Villages in Hambantota District in 2002, both of which were implemented by the Water Resources Board.
