CEB threatens to disconnect power to Colombo District and High Courts

by Sandasen Marasinghe

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) sent a notice to the Colombo District Courts for the recovery of a sum of Rs. 1,444,410 as outstanding electricity Bills of the District Court and the Colombo High Court, before March 5 or face disconnection.

According to a letter by the Area Electrical Engineer, Colombo West CEB to the Registrar of the Colombo High Court, the amount is for the electricity consumption by these two courts for a period of seven months.

The letter noted that an officer of the CEB was told at the end of last year that the bills would be settled when funds were allocated for the courts for the current year. Although many notices had been sent in this regard by the CEB no positive steps have been taken to settle the bills.

The letter further noted that when an officer from the CEB went to Court to discuss the matter, he has been asked by a Court official to grant them a further one week's period to settle the bill. This amount is apart from Rs 787,740 owing to the CEB by the Colombo Magistrate Court.

A senior officer of the Justice Ministry, when contacted told the Daily News that normally the working hours of these Courts are from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. but electricity consumption by the canteen for cooking too had been included in the electricity bills of the Courts.
