Amended Food Act regulations from April 1

by Ramani Kangaraarachchi

The amended regulations of the Food Act on Food Labelling and Advertising will be implemented from April 1. These will replace earlier regulations of 1993. The new regulations govern information that should appear on a label of any pre-packaged food product offered for sale, transported or advertised for sale in Sri Lanka. This includes all imported food items as well.

New features of the latest regulations cover inclusion of date of manufacture, the name or INS number of the food additives and claims to safeguard the consumer while maintaining the interests of the food manufacturer.

A seminar was organised by officials of the Food Control Administration recently to educate the people involved in the manufacture and import of pre-packaged food products on the new laws.

The seminar was held at the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI) auditorium.

According to the new laws with effect from the date of operation no one should sell, offer or expose for sale, transport or advertise, any food contained in a package or container which is labelled in accordance with the regulation.

The package should bear a label in respect of the food contained and should be clearly displayed in Sinhala, Tamil and English and the label should be affixed on the main panel of the package of the food indelibly printed or painted.

It should also include common name of the contents in bold type, brand or trade name in three languages, and the net contents of the package by the international symbols g or kg as applicable.

Malini Mallawaarachchi, Manager, Food Product Development Group of ITI said that although the gazette notification is the official document to implement this relevant section people in the trade were informed by the authorities about the changes sometime ago.
