CIC farm - now a tourist attraction The CIC Seed Farm at Pelwehera, Dambulla is fast becoming a tourist destination. Large groups of tourists mainly from Western Countries have visited the 675 - acre farm to observe and learn some of the traditional and latest methods adapted in the farm. The farm which is primarily for the growth of seed paddy has also a specially demarcated area for forest trees, fruit orchards and herbal plants which have been the centre of attraction for tourists. High-tech agricultural practices where micro-irrigation systems, drip/sprinkler irrigation methods and poly tunnels are used are also demonstrated at the farm. In addition a state of the art soil and seed laboratory constructed at a cost of over Rs. 14 million carries out analysis of soil, plants and seeds daily in order to recommend tailer made fertiliser mixtures for customers. Apart from tourists a large number of schoolchildren and University students visit the farm on a regular basis. CIC Fertilizers (Pvt) Ltd acquired the Government controlled farm on a long-term lease in year 2000 and has developed it into a model farm today. The farm produces around 20,000 metric tons of seed paddy annually which is the primary source for farmers in the North Central Province. Around 10,000 tissue cultured plants consisting mainly of Banana are also produced. |
