Indian composer to wave baton for leading British orchestra NEW DELHI, Wednesday (AFP) Hugely successful Bollywood composer A.R. Rahman has been drafted by the orchestra of one of Britain's most multicultural cities, Birmingham, to help broaden its repertoire with Indian themes, a report said. The musician, best known in the west as the composer of Bombay Dreams, the musical playing in London's West End, will take the baton at two concerts by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO), the Asian Age newspaper said. Birmingham is expected to have a non-white majority by 2010, making it one of Britain's most multicultural cities. The CBSO, which achieved international stature during the tenure of music director Sir Simon Rattle, before he moved to the Berlin Philharmonic, is seeking to find new audiences closer to home by persuading Britons of Indian and Pakistani origin to attend its concerts. The musicians will play themes from India's prolific film industry, including many of Rahman's works from films like "Bombay" and "Dil Se". Tickets for the symphony's 2,200 auditorium are already selling fast among Birmingham's sizeable South Asian population, the newspaper reported. At the age of 39, Rahman has already sold nearly 200 million albums and worked on more than 50 films. He recently agreed to compose the score for the stage musical version of Lord of the Rings due to open next year. |
