Sri Lanka Cricket - five year-plan Thilanga Sumathipala, President of Sri Lanka Cricket has decided not to present himself for re-election at the forthcoming Annual General Meeting scheduled to be held in March, 2004. A majority of the member clubs and associations have requested him for re-election for the coveted position of President of Sri Lanka Cricket. Sumathipala is greatly appreciative of the confidence they have reposed in him; but, is definitely in his decision. He is confident that the most deserving Administrators will be elected for the Executive Committee of Sri Lanka Cricket. He will personally support the best candidates and give them his fullest co-operation to help Sri Lanka Cricket achieve his vision of making Sri Lanka the best Cricket playing Nation in the world. The five year business plan put in place by Sumathipala will ensure the success of Cricket in Sri Lanka. It is important that the new Committee to be elected focus on the five key building blocks to take the game to greater heights in the world arena, and to help Sri Lanka realize its ambition of being the Asian Capital of Cricket. Future planning for Cricket in Sri Lanka should take notice of the following achievements and start from thereon. 1. International Cricket * The most competitive national team * Five international venues boasting of the highest standard. * The most advanced technology to support * An active calendar for home and away. * Ensure fixtures in Sri Lanka with the world's best and most competitive teams. * International exposure for our under 19 emerging and 'A' teams. * Follow a strategic path to succeed at every tournament leading to be the Asian Champs, and then again world supremacy at One Day Internationals and the Test arena. * Be guided by international coaching standards and world-class coaches. * The establishment of a high performance centre: The Cricket Campus. National Team * Practice facilities and research materials With the appointment of a new coach, physiotherapist and a specialist trainer, the National Team has significantly improved their performance and the competitiveness from each and every player demanded. Build up Teams The need for Build up teams to gain international exposure has been emphasized. Consequently, several reciprocal tours are scheduled for the A team, ACF Emerging (U 23) and the Under 19 among the test playing nations on home and away basis for the next 3 years. 2. Domestic Cricket * The breeding ground for international cricketers. * Nurture the competitiveness, basics of the game and the ideals of fair play. * The national pool is sourced from this resource bank. * An active schools programme. - with 400 schools - in under 14, 16 and 19 age groups - inter-district and inter-provincial tournaments. * Deployment of technology to mine this rich vein of data. * Premier league and knock-out tournaments - in division 1, 2 and 3. - limited over and three day games. - extend, reach and build popularity via live coverage, sponsorship and support activities. After years of research, geographically demonstrated provincial cricket tournaments have been established where cream of the cricketers compete within 5 teams in 4 days of vision to enhance the quality of cricket played at top international venues. Umpiring, accommodation, clothing and other required facilities with the state of live coverage and updates on National Television have been provided. The club tournaments, specially the limited overs, have been enhanced by improving local coverage, and assisting them with more fruitful structures. (To be continued) |
