News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | If compensation deadline was not met Oluvil port project would have been lost - Hakeem Ports and Shipping Minister Rauff Hakeem at a press conference yesterday referring to reports of an alleged of Rs. 555.8 million illegal ports deal on the eve of the general election said the Oluvil Port Project was started in 1997 with the blessings of the President, but it could not be implemented under the People's Alliance government,. Work was resumed in 2001 after the UNF government came to power. He said that assistance from Denmark amounting to 31.5 million Euros had been received and that the assistance of officials they had acquired the land on the basis of valuation reports prepared with the assistance of officials of the Fisheries, Finance and Ports Ministries. There were 385 families on the acquired lands. There was December 31, 2003 deadline for the payment of compensation to be paid and the project to commence after signing the contract. But as this process could not be completed on the due date, time was obtained with difficulty until March 31, 2004 for payment of the compensation. If this was not done Sri Lanka would have lost this project. Mr. Hakeem said he would be suing the State Media which carried the reports, if an alleged illegal ports deal on the eve of the general election. |
