Shehara first lady in a Formula Bernard Perera from Pannala Sri Lanka's only woman driver the young Shehara de Silva thrilled Motor Racing fans yesterday driving a Formula car to become the first lady to do so in Sri Lanka. Shehara clocked the fastest time on Saturday in the Suntel WoW racing championship at Pannala which was organised by the Ceylon Motor Sports Club. She won second place yesterday. Shehara who had the advantage position at the pole in the Formula Ford standard 1600 cc got off to a flying start leaving behind her male counterparts. She continued her drive magnificently until the third lap with Col. Ravi Mayadunne, Romesh Paul and Niroshan Perera following her.
In the third lap coming onto the straight the right hand corner Shehara faultered and went in to a spin which saw her lose few seconds. Mayadunne who was eagerly waiting for an opportunity got the best at this stage and got passed Shehara. Shehara who controlled the situation well was back on the track and kept on moving smoothly to finish as the first runner-up. Meanwhile the super car event was also keenly contested by two leading drivers, the two D's Dan and Dinesh behind their Mitsubishi Evo's. Dinesh who had the advantage at the pole could not make good use of this and had to trail behind Dan Dissanayake for over three laps. Dinesh was right behind Dan hoping for an error, this error and it came when Dan made a mistake while cornering the right hand bend. Dinesh the experienced driver made good use of this to go ahead of Dan and held onto win the race comfortably. In the two wheeler events it was non other than Maduranga Caldera who thrilled the crowd and won three events on his Honda CBR 250cc. Maduranga was at his best yesterday doing the cornering. He had tough competition coming from Mohamed Manaf and Dimithri Somasunderam. |
