Ex-UNPers in crossover talks with SLFP - Mahinda Rajapakse

by Chamikara Weerasinghe

Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapakse yesterday refuted reports which claimed that SLFP parliamentarians and members were on the verge of joining the UNF, as unfounded.

He said this was an ambitious attempt by the UNF to sweep the truth under the carpet. Rajapakse said these rumours were being spread by UNF propaganda centres engaged in a sinister campaign to hide the truth from the public, that many of their supporters have already left the UNF.

He said several former UNP parliamentarians want to join the Freedom Alliance, and a few key members of its hierarchy were presently discussing with the SLFP with a view to joining it.

He said UNF propaganda centres were spreading these rumours to pacify their leadership who have become intolerant with the defeat on the foreground in the forthcoming election.Rajapakse said he sees no reason why that anyone should leave the SLFP at this time.

The political trend is such that political parties have been gathering around the Freedom Alliance despite various differences in their parties, he said.
