JVP-SLFP had to change symbol thrice

It is ironical that the JVP-SLFP Alliance had to change its symbol thrice within three weeks.

This is not the first time that the JVP and SLFP changed their symbols and policies for grabbing power. Yet the UNP didn't change its policies or symbol for the entire forty-two years. It is because the UNP is having a broad national vision and a policy, unlike the JVP or SLFP, said UNP spokesman Gayantha Karunatileke in a press release yesterday.

He said the JVP-SLFP Alliance first wanted the lotus as its symbol and the MoU was signed with the poster depicting the lotus. It was changed to a butterfly the next week. Now in the third week it is changed to a betel leaf.

It also can be seen as an ironical selection. The fate of the betel leaf is to be chewed into small pieces and to be spitooned. The people of this country would do the same to JVP-SLFP Alliance on April 2.

The SLFP began in 1956 with the eye as its symbol. Later it was changed to the hand and under Chandrika it was changed to the chair.

Now it is changed to betel leaf through the lotus and butterfly. It is learnt that they are now trying to get the Olu flower (a kind of water lily) as their symbol. If that would happen it would even go into the Guinness Book of World Records.

The JVP started with the bell and later changed to a flower vase and again reverted to the bell to follow the same route.

There is no leader of the JVP-SLFP Alliance yet, no national organiser, no treasurer. It has been unable to call the first executive committee meeting. They have been still unable to finalise the policy statement.

Yet the secret MOU is already finished. How they can govern the country is not clear.

The people of Sri Lanka were still well aware how probationary government of the JVP and SLFP. Promising a pay hike it gave only a Rs. 1,000 allowance. It promised the World Bank to increase the oil prices according to the world market prices. It entered into the international agreement to sell water. It signed the agreement to sell the Bank of Ceylon and the People's Bank. It agreed not to give any relief on any imported item. These are only a few.

The JVP always wanted to take the country into uncertainty. They began in 1971 with firearms. Then they attacked innocent Tamils in 1983. Thirdly during 89-90 period, they made the country uncertain by a chit.
