Vijaya's 16th death anniversary today Today marks the 16th death anniversary of Vijaya Kumaratunga filmstar, politician and husband of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga. A special floral tribute will be paid to commemorate the event near his statue at Seeduwa today. The State Film Corporation under the instructions of its Chairman Jayantha Dharmadasa has organised a series of films to be screened free of charge at the Elphinstone theatre, Maradana, from 10 am. A commemorative speech of Vijaya by veteran actor Ravindra Randeniya will be delivered at the same venue around 6 pm. Thugs attack SLFPers decorating Vijaya Kumaratunga's statue by Negombo spl.corr.Alex David A gang of thugs who came by a van yesterday have attacked SLFP supporters who were decorating and colour washing the Vijaya Kumaratunga statue at the 18th mile post of Katunayake Airport Junction to prepare the site for the 16th commemorative ceremony of the late cinema actor turned political leader, Vijaya Kumaratunga. Of the four victims who were injured two are now warded in the Negombo Base Hospital under treatment. The Katunayake Police who arrived on the scene immediately arrested on suspicion two persons, Aruna Sri Nilantha Fernando and Colombage Chaminda Silva, both of Kurana, Katunayake and produced them before the Negombo acting Magistrate Godfrey Cooray who remanded the suspects pending an Identification Parade. Katunayake Police are continuing investigations. |
