Award of excellence for De Soysa Hospital for Women

The De Soysa Hospital for Women has been adjudged the winner of Taiki Akimoto 5 S award in the " Service Sector " by the Japan Sri Lanka Technical and Cultural Association (JASTECA).

Hospital's Director Dr. (Mrs) V.S.P. Pannila says the award is significant as it has been presented at a time when the Hospital is celebrating its 125th anniversary.

She further noted that: being a government institution with its resultant constraints of finance etc, we nevertheless decided that we should strive towards this ambitious target.

"We are proud to say that as a result of a totally committed and dedicated set of staff we were able to emerge the winner of the service sector award competing against 20 other top companies in the company."

The 5S award consists of 5 steps that need to be taken, and on successful implementation has the ability to make even the most poorly run organisation into one of excellence with a very high degree of productivity.

A donation by one of Sri Lanka's greatest philanthropists (Sir) Charles Henry de Soysa, the De Soysa Hospital (DMH) is a legacy he left for all the mothers of Sri Lanka.

Consisting of 343 beds, it is the first and premiere women's hospital in the country while being the second oldest in the Asian region. Patients from all over the country are treated here and provided with the best possible medical care.

Considered a national treasure, it is the fervent wish of the current staff that they continue the current progress and development, retaining its historical heritage together with its aesthetic values. Considering the huge resources required, it is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain these standards, as a Govt. Hospital.

While thanking those donors who have already contributed so generously, we call upon every right-minded citizen to contribute either in cash or in kind in whatever way they can to ensure the preservation of this haven for mothers and national treasure.
