"The US Aid Institute will continue to help the people of Jaffna in their development programs," Edward said when he visited Jaffna along with the Second Secretary of the American Embassy and other officials. Addressing mediamen, he said he had been appraised of the losses sustained by fishermen of Maruthapuram in Karainagar during the ethnic war. He had seen progress they had made with the American aid given to them. Edward said he was satisfied with that the money had been put to correct use. "The fishermen had brought five catamarans and a fishing boat to pursue their traditional vocation," he said. The Jaipur Footwear Institute is doing a very useful service to the disabled. The Rs. 50 lakhs given to them had been invested to expand their activities, Edward said. He added that peace should dawn in Sri Lanka and rehabilitation work should be accelerated for the people to get back to the status quo.
