Athula Nimalasiri joins UNP

by a Staff Reporter

Former Deputy Minister of Industries Athula Nimalasiri Jayasinghe joined the UNP yesterday.

He obtained party membership from UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Jayasinghe was defeated at the last general election but the PA brought him to Parliament under the national list at the expense of veteran Marxist and LSSP leader Batty Weerakoon.

Jayasinghe started politics from the JVP and was a top leader of the JVP in the 1971 insurgency but later turned a Government witness betraying JVP leaders and escaped from imprisonment. All other JVP leaders were sentenced for long term prison terms.

Thereafter, Jayasinghe started his political career from the SLFP. SLFP sources told the Daily News it was certain that the ex- MP would not receive nomination from the Freedom Alliance for the forthcoming general election as he was a poor organiser in the Gampaha district which was the reason for his defeat at the last election.

Jayasinghe criticised the UNP during debates in Parliament strongly stating that the UNP did not understand the pulse of the working class and voiced against corruption in the UNP.
