News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | JVP urges President: Sack corrupt Ministers The JVP yesterday urged President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to use her powers as the Executive President under the Constitution to take over the portfolios of Ministers resorting to corruption and malpractice when the country is preparing for a general election. The JVP politburo in a communique pointed out that the behaviour of some UNP Ministers in the caretaker Government were absolutely unbecoming and, that for instance, Finance Minister K. N. Choksy and Deputy Finance Minister Bandula Gunawardena have allegedly intervened to give 52 new appointments in the People's Bank. Land Minister Rajitha Senaratne has allegedly planned to distribute 100 acres of land in the Sinharaja Forest area of Kalutara District among his favourites. Furthermore, UNP Ministers against whom allegations of bribery and corruption are rampant, are reported to be removing away files from the Ministries, it added. It revealed that the former non-Cabinet Minister Jayalath Jayawardena after the dissolution of Parliament has allegedly taken steps to move his Ministry to a new premises at a higher rental which according to Ministry sources cost Rs. 42 more per square foot and that Rs. 9 million has already been paid as rent for the new premises. He has also removed away some official assets to his private residence, it said. The communique urged the President to enforce the law against the non-Cabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministers and appealed to all progressive forces to come forward to defeat this trend to have a fair and independent general election. |
