News Business Features Editorial Security Politics World Letters Sports Obituaries | UNF will be back - Azwer There was peace and normality in the country during the last two years under the UNF Government. The people will never like to return to war. The sudden dissolution of Parliament has affected the peace process, said Parliamentary Affairs Minister, A. H. M. Azwer. "Since the government did not have the majority to amend the Constitution, the President dissolved Parliament. In such a situation, the people are apprehensive that war is likely to return. When the peace process is stalled, we cannot expect donor countries to give aid. Foreign investment will also not take place in such a situation. When there is no peace, we cannot expect prosperity and economic progress in the country. It is not clear whether the JVP is pursuing the Marxist or following the Buddhist tenets," he told a UNP meeting at Udunuwara electorate. Former JVP MP, Wimal Weerawansa says the JVP will rule the country according to Buddhist principles, Azwer said. "On the other hand JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe 'imported' to this country, says they will follow the Marxist doctrine. Thus, there is a divergence and incompatibility between two conflicting and contradictory points of view," he said. When the JVP was trying to topple the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Government, the then Leftist leaders like Dr. S. A. Wickremesinghe, Dr. N. M. Perera and Dr. Colvin R. de Silva came to her rescue, Azwer said. "Recently several places of worship were destroyed and the country knows who was behind this sacrilege and crime and who was responsible for this state of affairs," he said. Azwer said the UNF will be back again with a comfortable majority at the general election. "The dissolution of Parliament by the President has helped us to achieve this. When the UNF was in power for the first time, the LTTE was prepared to enter into negotiated peace settlement. The UNF government revived the economy. The international community promised enormous amounts of money for rehabilitation of the North and East. The PA has joined the JVP which is pursuing its disastrous policies," he said. In this situation what are the solutions this Alliance is offering to the Tamils, Muslims and others to solve their problems. The Sinhalese will never support the PA/JVP Alliance which ignores two important ethnic groups in this country like the Tamils and Muslims. The UNP will return to power with a resounding majority on April 2. This is a definite certainty, Azwer said. Alhaj M. R. M. Amjad, Central Provincial Council Member, Alhaj Mohamed Haniffa, Trustee of Patupitiya Jumma Mosque and several others addressed the gathering. |
