Peiris alleged yesterday that the President was misusing the executive powers causing highly adverse consequences to the country. Cabinet spokesman and Minister Prof.G.L.Peiris told reporters at the weekly Cabinet media briefing yesterday that the country lost US$ 51 million that was to be allocated for community development in Moneragala and Hambantota by the World Bank, due to the sudden dissolution of Parliament. With an extension to this project to include the plantation sector in the Central Province, the World Bank has agreed to provide a total of US$ 184 million. "This has already been lost," the minister said. The plight of 185,831 AL candidates' were not taken in to consideration when this was done," the Minister said. The Minister said the present situation will have a very negative impact on the February 17 Washington meeting of co-chairs of the Tokyo donor conference who would be discussing the continuation of their assistance to develop the entire country. "All along she wanted to dissolve Parliament and go for polls." He called upon the concerned parties to invite international monitors from the European Union, United Nations, Governments of Japan, Norway and the Commonwealth to observe the election and pre and post election periods so as to be prepared for the worst. |
