by Nadira Gunatilleke

The special police unit of the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) has made arrangements to implement a new plan during this year to curb child exploitation.

The unit has received information on about 40 child exploitation cases from January to February 2004. Most of those cases are domestic child exploitation and foreigner-related child abuse cases, a NCPA spokeswoman said.

She said that the operations of the unit will be accelerated under this new plan.

The unit will conclude new complaints and ongoing investigations.

The cases will forwarded to the Attorney General's Department for investigations. The unit will coordinate with other police stations of the country in connection with child exploitation cases.

Sixteen specially trained police officers are attached to the special police unit of the NCPA. Apart form this special police team four IPs, three WSIs, two WPSs, five PCs and two WPCs are attached to this unit.

The NCPA provide resources for this unit while UNICEF provides 90 per cent of resources. This unit was set on October 1, 2002 attached to the NCPA.
