Election commission meets to prepare for polls NEW DELHI, Thursday (AFP) The chief of India's autonomous election commission signalled polling dates would be finalised soon by telling officials to "gear up" for general elections. Parliament is due to be dissolved this week. The election commission officials met to discuss dates for voting, likely to be staggered over several days in April and possibly in May. "The Election Commission today told poll officials to gear up to ensure free and fair polls," the Press Trust of India news agency reported. Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's cabinet recommended the dissolution of parliament in preparation for fresh elections in April or May. His Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been keen to cash in on a "feel-good" mood in India on the back of a surging economy and peace moves with Pakistan as well as to capitalise on a disarray in the main opposition Congress party, which has not held office since 1996. Congress was trounced in three state elections in India's Hindi-speaking heartland in December. |
