Speaking at the opening ceremony of the new communication locale attached to two post offices of Sangarajapura and Galagedera elevated to Supra Grade Post Offices, he said yesterday since the inception of Parliamentary democracy in the country over half a century ago, the policy of the political parties had been to gain power by rejecting views of rival parties. "This approach perplexed existing problems rather than solving them," he said. Markar said the masses' political wisdom became evident when at the 1999 Presidential Election, they elected the executive from one party and at the 2001 General Election, elected the legislature from a different party. "This was a call to the two major parties to build up a policy consensus to solve problems facing the country", the Minister said. After two years of hard labour, the two major parties have agreed that the attempt by the Executive to supersede the legislature or vice versa will only breed power struggle and leave room for opportunists to take advantage, he said. Under the circumstances, they have agreed to build a national consensus of all political forces to solve national problems. This opportunity therefore can be seen as a golden opportunity to solve national problems, Markar said. |
